Horse riding holidays and safaris

Kenya | East Laikipia

This is a 35,000 acre property situated in the East Laikipia district of Kenya, north of the equator with views to Mount Kenya. The property has a range of landscapes to explore from rolling plains dotted with whistling thorn acacias with oodles of plains game to deep valleys and high mountain ranges that carry mystique and awesome vistas. The eight-cottage lodge becomes very hard to leave when its time to go riding, nestled on a mountain slope it camouflages seamlessly into its surroundings with its swamp grass roofs and rendered earth walls. The lodge overlooks a dam that regularly plays host to elephant pool parties.

Borana has a range of horses from home bred to ex-polo ponies that didn’t cut the mustard on the field who become exceptional safari horses and a handful of ex-racehorses and ex-equestrian horses. A favourite breed at Borana are the Somali cross ponies that are energetic, quick off the mark and alert, these horses are for riders that appreciate a pocket rocket ride – so to speak. The stable has a range of horses to suit a variety of abilities.
