Meet a Globetrotter: Anne Cowell
Sometimes when you read what someone has written you think to yourself, “Yes, that’s exactly how it is, I couldn’t have put it better myself.” Well, I got that feeling when reading Anne’s responses to our ‘Meet a Globetrotter’ questionnaire so I’m just going to go right ahead and let her do the talking. Her insights are so profound and thoughtful, you will LOVE reading her story.

How have horses influenced or changed your life?
Wow, I haven’t thought about voicing how horses have influenced my life. But on reflection, I know that I feel privileged to have had contact with horses during several phases of my life. And for me, they epitomise the wonder and joy of our animal kingdom and are truly incredible creatures in so many ways. I love their beautiful faces and magnificently muscled bodies, the way they move is exquisite, and the combination of their power with their gentle natures is remarkable. They have served man through the centuries and we are so fortunate to have these amazing animals in our lives.
What is your earliest memory of horses?
I remember always feeling a strong allure of horses, but never had much opportunity to spend time with them when I was young. I only started riding and spending time with horses in my teens.
What does riding or being with horses mean to you?
Being around horses gives me a sense of peace and well-being. And riding is the cherry on top!
What have horses taught you the most?
They have enforced my love and respect for animals in general.
What was your first Globetrotting ride?
Lake Hawea and Hunter River Ride – South Island, New Zealand [edit: sadly no longer available].
What made you take the plunge and sign up for a Globetrotting holiday?
When I saw an advert pop-up on Facebook, my heart soared. It was as though an opportunity to do something that had been lurking in my subconscious for years, suddenly presented itself at exactly the right time in my life. I couldn’t ignore it. And going ‘alone’ was not even the slightest drawback. I felt that this was my time to do something entirely for myself and to abandon myself to whatever experience it may bring. I am thankful that I didn’t hesitate – it has been one of the most memorable and amazing experiences of my life.
Was this ride celebrating or marking a significant moment/milestone/achievement in your life? And if so, would you mind sharing?
I guess it was to celebrate my life. And to reward myself for my dedication to raising my family and putting them first – this was entirely and selfishly for me. And it made a profound mark on my soul – it was so very special in every way that I could have possibly dreamed of, and I drank in every moment of it.
What is your most memorable Globetrotting moment?
Where to start? I embraced it all and loved every single second. The horses were wonderful – they were all big and strong yet gentle and kind, and they did their job with calm confidence, which in turn gave me confidence. Our hosts, John and Angie were wonderful people – so warm and caring, and they both had a great sense of humour. The other globetrotters were great fun and I loved being with them all. The scenery was absolutely incredible and we were lucky enough to have a range of weather conditions, from rain to gradually more and more sunshine over the few days; with the last day presenting itself with glorious deep blue skies and bright sunshine. The different conditions added to the amazing experience (and we got to wear the Drizabone coats one day – wow, they are heavy when wet… walking in them at the end of the ride was an experience in itself). I loved being away from crowds of people and ‘having the place to ourselves’. It was good to have a break from cell phones and internet – we were living in the moment! In every way, this was a truly magical interlude in my life.
Why choose this type of travel? As in exploring a new place from the back of a horse?
Horses can go to places you may never otherwise have the opportunity to see. And the pace allows you time to drink it all in. This trek encompassed the taste of the clean air, the sounds of the horses’ hooves clipping over the stones, the beauty of the rivers and streams flowing on their paths, the wonder of the huge mountains above the track, the colour of the clear water. And one has an unencumbered 360 degree view whenever you wish by just a little turn in your saddle! I loved being immersed in nature – it was food for the soul.
Who is your favourite safari horse of all time and why?
My boy Dude, of course! He was a real gentleman and looked after me every minute. I felt so safe and secure on him.
A tip that every globetrotter should know before going on a ride…
Don’t overpack!!! And the fact that I worked on my riding fitness before going, definitely added to my enjoyment.
