As a lover of the outdoors, I can’t think of anything more luxurious than the lingering beauty of an evening sky, or the dancing colours and camaraderie of a campfire. But sleeping in a tent or under the stars can come with some tricky comfort challenges not found in a deluxe five-star lodge. Let’s just say its CRUCIAL to have good gear to ensure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons – especially when it comes to your sleeping comfort.

Sleeping bags liners are the unsung heroes of the camping world. They keep your sleeping bag clean and they’re much easier to wash. They help protect against bugs and mosquitoes and more importantly add an extra layer of warmth and comfort to your Globetrotting sleep experience, all while taking up next to no space in your bag. #winning

But where to start? If you’re new to the world of sleeping bag liners you’ll undoubtedly get confused and waylaid by the assortment of designs and fabrics to choose from. Let me tell you, its a sleeping bag jungle out there – who knew, right?

Here at Globetrotting we’re all about making life easier for you. You’ll be singing our praises when you’re super snug in your sleeping bag liner, cocooned in a sleeping bag in the Mongolian wilderness or on a Cattle Drive in the Big Horn, USA.

As The Name Suggests

A sleeping bag liner slides inside the sleeping bag. If you happen to be on a ride where it’s warm at night, you might even ditch the bag altogether and just use the liner. The best type for your needs will depend a lot on where you’re going and your sleeping preferences. There are two shapes, mummy bag liners and rectangular liners. Their differences in functionality and price lie in the material they’re made from.

Warmth

Think thermal – these liners use hollow-core fiber insulation. The fabric increases warmth and is faster drying than cotton, but they can be among the more expensive.

Comfort

Fleece and Microfleece varieties are soft and comfortable against the skin, quick drying and they wick away moisture. For packing they can be bulkier and heavier. Usually priced in the moderate range.

Ideal for Humid Conditions

Synthetic varieties are moisture wicking and breathable with stretch that’s great if you’re a restless sleeper. Moderately priced.

Multi-Purpose for any climate

Warm in cold weather, cool in summer conditions, the silk-polyester blend or pure silk is lightweight and compact for packing. However, they are usually in the more expensive range.

Cheapest

Cotton liners are inexpensive. They are durable and absorbent but can be heavier and take up more space in your bag.

Extra Protection

Some liners come with anti insect and/or antibacterial protection from bugs, mould and odours, and they are not necessarily more expensive. This makes them well worth a look.

Our well-travelled Globetrotters know that nothing sets you up for an excellent day in the saddle more than a restful night’s sleep.
