Yarra Valley Ride, Australia

3 NightsBeginner to AdvancedFrom $2,380 AUD

From pristine bushland to world class wineries, the places you’ll go astride your willing steed will leave your globetrotting heart (and belly!) full to the brim.

The Yarra Valley stretches northeast of Melbourne like the sweep of a paintbrush, full of vibrant colours, fantastic flavours and diverse natural beauty. From pristine bushland to world class wineries, the places you’ll go astride your willing steed will leave your globetrotting heart (and belly!) full to the brim.

Your host, Clancy Lewis, has been guiding horse rides in the Yarra for decades and knows every trail inside-out. He’ll show you all the best-kept secrets of his beloved valley and do his utmost to make this the best minibreak of your life. The combination of spectacular riding trails and immersive off-the-horse experiences makes each day feel more magical than the last. You’ll also be plied with plenty of gourmet food and wine, whether around the campfire, at a fine-dining restaurant or in secluded picnic spots.

Your accommodation in Chum Creek hits all the right notes, with two nights in gorgeous, well-appointed huts {shared bathroom and toilet facilities} at the base of the valley and one night at a rustic mountain hut. Here you can choose to get a taste of ‘swag life’ or cosy up in the hut, but either way, the morning views will take your breath away.

With three full days of riding and a generous helping of food, wine and laughter guaranteed, the Yarra Valley Ride is perhaps the ULTIMATE Aussie Globetrotting mini-break.

  • Day 1

Yippee, your Yarra Valley adventure is about to begin! Arriving at your host’s property, Chum Creek, by 9am, you’ll check into your accommodation, the gorgeous Chum Creek Huts. Then, once you’ve met your guides and fellow globetrotters, you’ll head to the horse yards to meet your equine partner.

Once everyone is comfortable in the saddle, your guides will lead you up over Paul’s Range and into Toolangi State Forest. Trotting beneath majestic eucalypts and tree ferns, you’ll see an incredible array of birds flying and calling from the canopy, and maybe even wildlife such as wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, goannas and deer hiding amidst the undergrowth. Emerging onto picturesque country laneways, you’ll ride to De Bortoli Estate, one of the most prestigious wineries in the Yarra. Here you’ll leave the horses to rest outside while you and your fellow globetrotters sit down to a gourmet lunch at De Bortoli’s restaurant, ‘Locale’, before indulging in a wine tasting at the cellar door.

Then it’s back to the horses for a relaxing ride home through the bush to Chum Creek, where a tasty dinner will be served.

  • Day 2

Waking up to birdsong in your cosy, well-appointed hut, you’ll be presented with a hearty cooked breakfast on the front porch overlooking the valley. After filling up, it’s time to heed the call of the horse yards and mount up for another terrific day’s riding in the Yarra Valley. Heading down a different track in Toolangi State Forest, you’ll ride deeper into the bushland, with opportunities to canter should you feel the urge. The higher you go, the taller the trees grow and the air slightly thins. The views are spectacular, so don’t forget your camera!

The crew will meet you at Toolangi for a true Australian barbeque lunch, before you head off again through native forest tracks and along ridge lines. Tonight you’ll head to the exclusive ‘Yarra Valley Mountain Hut’ for a campfire dinner under the stars and a wine tasting courtesy of local winery, Tokar Estate. Sitting back next to the fire, drink in hand, stories flowing, taking in the phenomenal view across the Yarra Valley, you’ll feel a profound sense of ease. Does life get any better, globetrotters?

  • Day 3

Blinking away the sleep dust this morning, you’ll be greeted by the sounds, sights and smells of a Yarra Valley morning, with another delicious cooked breakfast waiting for you. You’ll then head back to the horses (who are at home base) and prepare for one final, glorious ride. From temperate rainforests to craggy ridge lines, today’s scenery will stick with you for years to come. On reaching your lunch spot, the horses will take a break while your hosts whip up a barbeque lunch and drinks. Afterwards, the path winds its way back to Chum Creek Huts (where you stayed on night 1). There’ll be time to relax on the deck before sitting down to dinner al fresco with your new globetrotting compadres.

  • Day 4

One last filling breakfast will be served this morning, after which you’re free to say a fond farewell to your horse, guides and fellow guests and head home, heart brimming with the freedom and elation that comes from three full days in the saddle.

  • Transfer Information

There are no transfers available for this ride. It is recommended that you either self-drive, or arrange your own transfer from a provider based in Melbourne or the Yarra Valley (our ride partner recommends either Felix Chow – 0468 476 755, or Michael Glasson – 0418 994 586).

You’ll need to arrive at Chum Creek Huts (221 Heath Road, Chum Creek – go to the end of Heath Road) by 9am on day 1 of the itinerary. On the last day you’re free to depart anytime after breakfast.

Should you wish to stay in the region the night before the ride begins, we recommend the RACV Country Club in Healesville (only 5mins from Chum Creek Huts), or Balgownie Estate in Yarra Glen (approx. 20mins away).

  • Additional Activities

Should you wish to enjoy a massage during your ride, these can be arranged on Friday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon between 5 and 7pm. Bookings are essential – please contact Globetrotting to arrange. The price is $66 for 30mins, $88 for 45mins or $110 for 60mins, payable in cash direct to the masseur.

What our valued Globetrotters say about The Yarra Valley Ride

Fiona Smith

‘Being a competitive rider, I was asked why I would choose to holiday on horseback, and wouldn’t I get bored? The answer was ‘NO way!’ We had loads of fun chatter with like-minded riders and spectacular scenery. Great hosts that made us feel safe and welcome. Excellent catering and accommodation filled with open fires and lots of laughs. Plenty of down-time to read a book and relax. I literally did not have to lift a finger, and got to enjoy my biggest passion at the same time – the wine… oh, and the horses!’

Alison Venn

‘A great few days in the Yarra Valley with my daughter enjoying the warm hospitality of Clancy and his team, willing horses and lovely scenery. I enjoyed the rustic but cosy cottage my daughter and I had to ourselves and I was very happy with the food. The cheese platters were exceptional thanks to a wonderful local supplier. We could have easily kept going for a few more days.’

Gayl Dobbin

‘The catering on this ride was absolutely outstanding – so much better than other adventure experiences I have had. It showcased local producers and foods, and every meal was amazing. The accomodation exceeded expectations, too. Our guides were all excellent and very entertaining. We had different weather every day, but the ride through the tree fern forests in the fog was most memorable. This ride was excellent value for money and I would definitely recommend it.’

Gaye Dower

‘Only one word describes my Yarra Valley Ride… euphoria! From the minute I arrived and met Clancy, his family, staff, my new likeminded friends and and my spectacular horse Cleo, nothing could be faulted. The service, accommodation, meals, horses and rides were absolutely perfect. Every meal was 10/10 and met my dietary requirements. After not riding for 35 years I was a little nervous, but within a couple of hours on Cleo and with some encouraging words from Clancy, I was cantering confidently, with total faith in my beautiful mare. She was alert, interested in her surroundings, surefooted and very responsive. Looking back on the photos, she regularly has a huge grin! If you are thinking of a Globetrotting ride, choose the Yarra Valley Ride and you will be as happy as I still am days later!’

Michelle Gray

‘As usual, Globetrotting delivers! Ride partners Clancy and his team leave no stone unturned to provide an experience that fits each guest. They navigate rider proficiency differences with consideration for each individual and ensure that no one is left behind. Clancy is what they call the “real deal”: empathetic and highly skilled as a horseman and a host. Food, accommodation and personalized attention makes for a winning combination! The support of local produce and cottage industries was a highlight and home cooked, wholesome, fresh food was in abundance. I’m local, but I would have been happy to travel a long way in order to have this experience! Sometimes people are skeptical of experiences close to home, but nothing about this ride was common. You could have been anywhere in the world – I was just lucky it was in my backyard.’

Marnie Phillips

‘Great long canters in the beautiful Yarra Valley and gorgeous stops for outdoor lunches with great food and spectacular views! Saturday afternoon lunch under the tree with those views was terrific! I loved the uphill bush bashing, too. The accommodation was very spacious and beautifully decked out. I loved the hut and the gorgeous little bathtub! I would definitely recommend this ride.’

Sophie Parkhill

‘I absolutely loved the Yarra Valley Ride! My horse Snow was a perfect gentleman with a surprising turn of speed when asked. The food was amazing and plentiful – you certainly won’t go hungry on this ride! Clancy is your typical laconic bushman who really wants you to have a special, authentic Aussie bush experience, and clearly loves his horses. All the staff go above and beyond to make sure your time will be remembered long after the ride is over.
The scenery was stunning. I won’t soon forget watching the sunset and sunrise from our campsite, or the singing and sense of camaraderie around the campfire! I would definitely recommend this ride to anybody (and already have!). Thanks Globetrotting for pulling another gem out of the riding hat!’

Beth Mason

‘I cannot praise the Yarra Valley Ride enough, it was easily the highlight of my year! Between the beautiful horses, our accommodating and and very entertaining hosts, the stunning scenery and my delightful Globetrotting companions, it’s impossible to choose a highlight. It was the perfect balance between exhilaration and relaxation – we were spoilt both in and out of the saddle. I appreciated the opportunity to ride a different horse each day (Clancy was so accommodating!). We spent our days negotiating bush trails, trotting through dense forest and cantering up steep inclines. It was such a treat to return to a huge cheeseboard waiting on the patio, followed by a delicious dinner with local wines. Our group became fast friends and we had almost as much fun chatting around the fire as we did on horseback.
This was my first Globetrotting ride (hopefully of many!) and it exceeded all my expectations.’

Tammie Marshall

‘I was absolutely blown away by the entire experience. Clancy and his team were amazing in every aspect. They were all really knowledgeable and friendly, and the hospitality was second to none. The accommodation was just perfect and the food was delicious. You will not go hungry!
The horses were all in great shape and so reliable. They each had their own personalities and we all rode a horse unique to our own needs and capabilities. I rode Larry and wanted to take him home with me!
The trip was just fabulous and I can’t recommend it enough. I loved every minute! We had such a diverse group of riders but we got along like a house on fire, and after only three days it was so hard to leave my new friends!’
