Kobuchizawa, Japan

Tanaka san our guide in Japan

Meet Tanaka san, our guide based in Japan, not only does he guide and interpret our globetrotters who sign up for our 5 day, 4 night riding holiday in Japan. He also takes Japanese riders on riding adventures all over the world.

How long have you been running your horse riding holidays?

I’ve been taking Japanese clients on rides for 21 years, since 1995. We’ve ridden through Australia, China, France ,Hungary, Ireland , Koria, Mongolia, Spain, UK, US.
I’ve been working exclusively with globetrotting for the past two years.

And what was the background, history or reason for starting?
I started Freedom Riding Club after I semi-retired. Before retirement, I was in international exchange business ( congress organizing, translation, multi-lingual publishing ). I’ve always been interested in different cultures.

Working with globetrotting was answering the request ( or pressure) from friends in Tasmania {Jen & Jeremy on our Tassie Tiger Trail}. After I started taking guests from Australia, I found the job interesting, and I really enjoy it now.

How many guest horses do you have?

Describe your herd of horses in four words.
Gentle, reliable, mountain horses.

What is the philosophy or ethos behind your riding holidays in Kobuchizawa in Japan?
Provide cultural experiences nobody else can offer.

What do you love most about your job?
Meet nice people who share the same values.

What is the most challenging part?
Forecasting the timing of cherry blossoms, it lasts only a week and the timing changes every year.

Why should globetrotters sign up for this ride?
Because it is a good way to look at Japan. Nobody else is offering this kind of tour in Japan.

Finish this sentence – Don’t leave home without…
Warm clothes. Kobuchizawa is in the high country of Japan.

What has been the most memorable or significant moment of your guiding career?
When I received great feedback from the globetrotters. That is the most rewarding.

Check out his ride here.
