‘The Glenorchy Back Country Ride was amazing. Our guides took great care of our group and the horses, as well as keeping us very well fed. I enjoyed getting to know them and would happily have them as guides again. My horse, Murphy, was strong and confident, and I always felt safe with him, no matter the terrain. The group of fellow riders were interesting, and I would love to ride with them again. The scenery was breathtaking, and it felt as though I was riding through the Lord of the Rings movies. Bareback riding was a new challenge for me, and I was nervous, but with encouragement and support from my guides, I did it! I felt incredibly proud of myself. I will never forget the experience or the kind encouragement that made it possible. The trip was well-organized in all aspects, and I am already looking forward to my next Globetrotting ride.’

‘I had an absolutely brilliant week on the Glenorchy backcountry ride. It was a remote and rustic experience, immersed in pristine nature and its elements. The guides were knowledgeable, diligent, and trustworthy, and the horses were well-kept, fit, and forward-moving, excelling at their work. I rode a mare called Peso, who was an absolute delight. Camping at Arthurs Creek was a real highlight, and despite the lack of power, town water, and reception, it still felt like a special place. On day five, the weather was rough, but we all chose to push through and take the planned route rather than a shorter one. It helped that we trusted our guides’ judgment entirely. This was my favourite ride of all, as we came across a different river system and saw quite different landscapes. There’s no better way to see Middle Earth than in the mist and rain. The ride felt like a real mission, even if not quite Tolkienian in scale. It always makes a difference when you have great company. All I can say is, on the four Globetrotting rides I have done, I’ve never had anything but great company. These rides are the best levellers, and everyone seems to want to share their own fascinating experience, wisdom, and brand of kindness. Thanks again, Globetrotting. ‘I had been sitting on the fence about this ride. But, after seeing all the amazing photos shared by other globetrotters, I finally decided to go for it. And let me tell you, it was totally worth it! The ride was just as amazing as everyone had said it would be. The horses were absolutely wonderful, the scenery was breathtaking, and the guides, accommodations, and food were all top-notch. I rode Peso, a gorgeous mare, and by the third day, we had formed a special connection.  She has been my favourite trail horse so far. New Zealand is such a special place, and this ride truly captures the beauty of it all. So, if you’re thinking about it, just go ahead and book it. Trust me, you won’t regret it! Just make sure your phone has plenty of storage space for all the incredible photos you’ll take.’

‘We went on a double mother-daughter trip with our oldest friends to Glenorchy, which had the most beautiful scenery. Every day was spectacular and spending 5 days on horseback totally unplugged was the perfect mixture of adventure and relaxation. Our guides were awesome and the accommodation was more than we could have hoped for. It was an all-time trip. Globetrotting helped us feel so prepared; the packing list was perfect and helped us stick to the necessities. I wore almost everything I packed and didn’t miss a single thing. ‘This was my second on the  Globetrotting Glenorchy Back Country Ride, and it was just as wonderful as the first one. I rode a wonderful little horse called Slim who was the real gentleman. The team did a wonderful job of matching us with willing, experienced horses who knew their job. I met wonderful friends and explored one of the most beautiful areas of NZ. The guides, Shaun and Joel looked after us so well. There was plenty of great food, and the accommodation was basic, rustic and clean. Put this ride on your bucket list!’

‘It took me a few days to come down from the high I was on after spending five days and four nights on the Glenorchy Back Country Ride. What an experience! We crossed glacier-fed rivers, swam with the horses, plunged into a waterfall and circumnavigated snow-capped mountains. The scenery is jaw-dropping! Our guide, Sean, was incredibly knowledgeable and fun, and the trip was made even sweeter by the best bunch of funny, strong women, capable horses and many, many bottles of wine. I would recommend it to anyone who’ll listen!’

‘What an absolutely incredible ride. Not only have I walked away from this with my bucket filled, but I got to experience so many things I’d never done before! Swimming with the horses in a glacier fed river, diving into a pool of ice-cold water under a waterfall and cantering and galloping across the most incredible landscapes – I will cherish these memories forever. I went on this trip with the mindset that I wouldn’t say no to anything, would expect the unexpected and enjoy each day as it came. I’m so glad I did, because the newfound confidence in my abilities as a rider that this trip gave me is just indescribable.’

‘Breathtaking scenery with snow-capped mountains in the foreground whilst crossing pristine alpine rivers on magnificent horses! I rode Kumara, and I adored him. He was a very responsive, keen adorable horse with good pep in his step and a smooth canter. The guides were amazing and knew a lot about the area and the horses. They offered great hospitality and were always positive. A real highlight was swimming the horses bareback in the pristine, ice-cold alpine river. Just enchanting!’

‘Do yourself a favour and get on the Glenorchy Back Country Ride. The scenery is breathtaking. The air is fresh, the water is clean and crisp and the horses are outstanding. You’re off grid for the whole trip and can truly reconnect with nature. Every day was a highlight – the scenery was incredible. Swimming in the glacier-fed streams and with the horses was amazing, too. Bonus: there are no creatures in New Zealand that can kill you!’

‘I was absolutely ecstatic with this trip! The meals were so good and fresh, and I was very happy with the accommodation. I had a horse named Roll, who was sweet as. Bijmin was a genius when it came to horses, with more knowledge and experience than anyone I know, and Gabby went above and beyond to accommodate us all. I especially loved the river crossings on day 1, and day 3 when we got to gallop! The value for money was excellent and I’d happily book with Globetrotting again.’

‘Could it get any better – a beautiful horse, incredible scenery, fresh air and no mobile phone reception for days. New Zealand, you blow my mind. ‘This is the 13th week-long trek I’ve done in New Zealand. Most of these have been on the ‘Great New Zealand Trail Ride’, on a mix of my own and borrowed horses, which was held in some pretty great North Island locations. This trek in Glenorchy, however, was by far the best I’ve experienced. Each day was better than the last. The location is just epic and magical, the horses are perfect for the job and seem pretty darn happy with their life, and the guides are delightful. They are passionate, patient, helpful, interested and interesting people. I would absolutely do this ride again in a couple of years and would be delighted if they were still there.’

‘This ride was really wonderful. I can’t say enough good things about the guides. They were absolute champs, so experienced and helpful, and great to talk to. I was nearly moved to tears when they brought out a cake and sang Happy Birthday for me. So cool!
The horses were really well trained and willing. The day we got to swim the horses was the very best day, and the last night in the B&B was such a treat. I couldn’t be happier to have gone on this ride – it was truly spectacular country, and on horseback is the best way to see it. I had a fabulous time and would love to go back!’

‘If you are considering doing one of these rides, just DO IT! An amazing experience for any horse lover or traveller. Every day was spectacular. My horse Dylan was perfect… a well educated, safe little Appaloosa Quarter Horse who looked after me every day. Our guides were skilled in horsemanship, cooking and conversation among other things, and went above and beyond to make this ride incredible. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. The food was delicious and served in huge quantities – dinners were spent laughing and sharing stories together.
Just an all-round amazing experience.’

‘I had an incredible time on the Glenorchy Back Country Ride, soaking in the beautiful scenery in the company of wonderful horses and people. Every day was a new adventure, with all the necessary comforts waiting for us at the end of the day’s ride. It was relaxed but also action packed, a perfect getaway to forget your troubles and just enjoy the moment. I loved swimming the horses – it was such a special experience. I rode Merlin and he was wonderful. All the horses on the ride looked to be much better than any other trail riding horses I have ridden before. ‘I’d definitely recommend this trip! Every day was different and interesting; I enjoyed the whole experience. The accommodation was great, even the tents. Our guides were exceptional in every area, guiding our group with experience and a sense of humour. At the start I was hesitant, but they matched me with a perfect pony called Solly who took great care of me. I completely trusted their pairing and Solly really built my confidence. I fell in love with him!’

‘This is the first long ride I’ve done, and the first Globetrotting ride, but it won’t be the last. The whole experience was terrific, and excellent value for money. I really loved the last night at Paradise. Our guides, Jess and Bijmin, were exceptional, and I couldn’t believe how well Casey matched horses with riders. I rode JT and he was fabulous. I like a horse with a bit of ‘go’, so he was just right for me. I would definitely recommend this ride!’

‘My Glenorchy Back Country Ride was sublime… beyond expectations. The horses were exceptional. I was allocated the most divine, well-schooled, spirited gelding called Doobie, and we bonded instantly, as did the other riders with their steeds. Spending time with these stunning horses was a gift. We had snow the night before our trek (capping the mountains), sunshine for a few days (flushing the lupines), rain one day (flooding the streams) and sunshine on our last day; the perfect mix for exploring this striking landscape. Plus, our hosts and guides were among some of the nicest people I’ve ever met – generous, warmhearted and highly skilled. They tended to our every need, providing nourishing meals, welcoming lodgings and inspired conversations. I’ve made so many new friends from the experience and I’m blessed to have made the journey.’

‘I absolutely loved the Glenorchy Back Country Ride, it exceeded all expectations! The experience of riding through New Zealand’s most stunning, scenic back country was just incredible. We did the most amazing river crossings, rode through beautiful beech forests, up and down hills, and alongside the stunning Diamond Lake. The horses were very well looked after, kind and willing, and our guide Shaun was absolutely brilliant. I’m not a regular rider and wondered how my body would cope, but it was no problem. I rode Spud and he was the perfect confidence builder – we had some great canters and a gallop. Although none of us knew each other, it was a lovely small group and we had some great laughs and formed good friendships. It was my first Globetrotting ride and I’m hooked!’

‘The Glenorchy Back Country Ride was an amazing treat for the senses. Spectacular New Zealand scenery and varied riding challenges across crystal clear rivers, through forests and over mountains, all with a backdrop of glaciers and snow-capped mountains… incredible! I rode Peso – I loved her. Very sweet and responsive when I asked her to be, but cruised along otherwise. She was quite laid-back and had a nice comfortable canter, so she was a relaxing ride, but always up for some fun. Jess and Bijmin were helpful and friendly – we were very well looked after. I loved every day!’

‘Every day was awesome, but the swimming was a highlight and all the cantering was really fun. The scenery was so incredible! The horse I rode was Peso. She was always well behaved and ready to go at any speed I wanted. She was a good match for me and made the ride stress free.
Our guides were above excellent! They were always watching over us and the horses, always informing us as to what was going on, very knowledgeable about the area and horses, and great riders. They were very accommodating with the food, always having a gluten free choice for me, which I greatly appreciated. The “feast” on the last night of the ride was so beautiful and incredible. And the accommodations were always good, especially that last night at Paradise. I feel like they always did a little extra for us in every situation.’

‘This was my second Globetrotting experience and just like the first (Canada), I was blown away. My wonderful mount Gizzy was perfectly matched to my style and experience. The two guides, Jess and Bijmin, were beyond exceptional; they worked so incredibly hard to please all of us and always carried a smile even in the toughest situations. Deana and Casey were also fabulous and I thoroughly enjoyed riding with them and learning about the history of their business. All the horses were loved and well looked after, which is a big tick and must.
I give this trip a 10/10 – loved every minute. Be prepared to fall in love with this wonderful country!’

‘This experience was a dream come true and I wish it never ended. I had to pinch myself repeatedly to see if it was a dream. Truly amazing views, guides I feel are one of a kind, high quality horses and spectacular accommodation and catering. I will definitely be heading back.

‘The Glenorchy ride was fantastic! The horses, accommodation, food and guides are amazing. Not to mention the scenery. I  rode Cashout and he was a complete sweetheart. He was surefooted, respectful and happy to break from the group when asked. His canter was lovely, too. I was also lucky enough to ride JT for a day and he was super. Our guides worked so hard to have everything ready and perfect for us and their level of horsemanship was beyond what I had expected. They were very skilled in communicating with each and every one of us.
This trip was great value for money, as it’s hard to put a price on my level of enjoyment and that spectacular scenery. Well worth it!’

My fellow companions became friends and our guide Shaun looked after us and our horses extremely well: a great cook with an extensive knowledge of the local environment and rivers we crossed, as well as the wildlife we saw. Our guides Shaun and Nat were very helpful and full of knowledge. They worked hard to take care of the horses and riders and prepare yummy food for all of us. I rode Tonto and he was such a star! ‘The High Country of New Zealand, you have delivered! I genuinely enjoyed each day. We crossed glacial rivers, rode through riverside lupins and ancient beech forests, marveled at the magnificent high country landscape and even found our way to ‘Paradise’. The ‘Good Ship Buddy’ saw me safely through the river crossings and he was such a comfortable ride. Our guides guides Bijmin, Jess and Casey were the bomb. It was truly special to witness people with such natural horsemanship skills who have genuine love and care for their charges. ‘This trip is awesome! Lakes, mountains, waterfalls and wildlife, all experienced from the backs of amazing horses with the most caring guides. It feels like a cross between a point-to-point trip and a lodge-based trip, which is a great middle ground for anyone not really wanting to go the whole hog with camping and packhorses, but still wanting that sense of rawness. I rode Cashout and was really happy with how he went. I really loved the opportunity to do some exploring off the horses, too – hiking up to the waterfall was really fabulous. It is always hard to put a value on these types of trips, but I  LOVED this ride and would have to say it is great value for money.’

‘My third Globetrotting ride didn’t disappoint. Our guides Jess and Shaun were great, leading us through the pristine countryside of Glenorchy armed with their wealth of knowledge about the area. Our horses were steadfast, carrying us across crystal clear rivers and galloping up mountain ranges, not batting an eyelid at the rabbits that would leap out of the long, lush grass and dart off from under their feet. The food was great and catered to everyone’s requests. The scenery was totally amazing – and I almost forgot about the highlight, swimming with the horses!’

‘This ride was everything I was hoping it would be. Every day was amazing. Great horses, company, food and scenery. I’m already planning my next trip. I rode Snoopy and he was just the type of horse I asked for: slow and safe. Now I know that on my next ride, I’m ready to go up a grade! The guides were lovely and they worked hard to keep us all happy. We were so well fed that I was starting to feel sorry for Snoopy – I was pretty sure I’d come back 10 kilos heavier! I would definitely recommend this trip – it’s a very fair price for an extremely well organised ride.’

‘I have always had a passion for riding, so when I saw the Glenorchy Back Country Ride advertised on Facebook, with all the positive reviews, I knew I had to do it. I was turning 50 this year, and it was time to start checking off the bucket list. This was #1 on my list and it will be a hard trip for anything to compare to. The entire experience was beyond my highest hopes. The horses, guides, scenery, food – just everything was perfect. I felt like a little girl filled with joy as we walked, trotted and cantered across the rivers, fields, forests, and up the mountains. This is exactly how I wanted to kick off the ‘second half’ of my life. I’m already planning to go on a few other Globetrotting adventures, as I know they have been perfectly and meticulously planned and the bar is set super high, ensuring the experience of a lifetime. ‘The scenery was absolutely beautiful. I rode Dylan, who was very comfortable. Having not ridden for years, it took a few days to remember how to saddle the horse and get my seat back. I was the only one without a horse at home, but everyone was very helpful. On the whole I think I rode quite well, but experience does help enormously. We had a lovely friendly group of people, too. I loved hearing their stories of the different rides they’ve done. The guides were exceptional in their knowledge and care of everyone. It is a very well run business and I would highly recommend this trip to other riders – worth every penny.’

‘A dream finally coming true. I had looked at Glenorchy and horse trekking in general around New Zealand for many years. I had done two previous treks that included an overnight stay, but this was an opportunity to immerse totally: no communication with the outside world. My new friends the horses, our guides and our horse riding buddies were fantastic. Not to mention my new best friend Beer, a fantastic, brave, kind, clever, handsome, happy fellow. I particularly loved galloping up the hill, all the river crossings, and riding back from Paradise going around the mountain.
I was totally impressed with our guides. Passionate horse people, totally professional, amazing people skills, polite, knowledgeable, humorous. They took no shortcuts with safety – it was paramount. I think you would be hard pressed to find better guides. If you find yourself looking at this ride thinking ‘Wow, I would love this’, then do it. I have no regrets!’

‘We had the best week and absolutely loved the Glenorchy ride. The horses were superb. I rode Doobie – a true gentleman who was fazed by nothing! A big strong fellow who handled the terrain beautifully. Our guides were fantastic. They showed great care for the horses and looked after us all so well. We ate really really well and the accommodation was as described – the last night at Paradise was beautiful! The scenery and river crossings were amazing. There were seven of us as a group of girlfriends and we all agreed that it surpassed all of our expectations. Such a special place. I highly, highly recommend this ride.’

‘The Glenorchy Back Country Ride was absolutely magical. The horses were amazing, responsive, well cared for and well educated. I rode the handsome Buddy, who was a bit of a character at the start, but by the end I wanted to bring him back to Australia with me, and I shed a few tears when I had to say goodbye. ‘This was my first multi-day ride and it was outstanding! I had minimal experience (riding friends’ horses as a child, trail rides on holidays and several lessons/rides in the lead-up to this trip). I highly recommend this holiday for riders of all levels. The guides were outstanding and split the group up according to ability so that everyone could maximise their experience. They were encouraging and easy to follow, and took great care to check on the horses and the tack, as well as helping advise on skill improvement. By the last day I had gained the skills to canter with confidence. The food, accommodation, horses, supplies and scenery were top notch! They didn’t miss a thing.’

‘Well, what a week! I had been looking forward to this ride for almost a year and have probably bored my friends silly with the excitement I had leading up to it. It did not disappoint. The staff, especially our guides for the week, Nat and Shawn, were fantastic. Nat and Shawn excelled at looking after our group of ten riders and horses, and their knowledge of the areas we rode through was fantastic. I tried some native berries, was informed about native flora and experienced some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. I was matched to the best horse I could imagine. His name was Cruise and what a wonderful boy he was. I felt completely at ease riding him for the five days. One word of advice: beware the sand flies and cover up everything. But in all honesty, if I could do it all again I would not hesitate – sandflies and all.’

‘I had that best time! What a beautiful place to visit – I honestly think I could live there. We had the best guides, Jess and Shaun, and a huge thanks to Deana and Casey. The horses were in terrific condition. I rode a horse called Jungle, who was an absolute gentleman – kind and responsive and did everything I asked of him, a pleasure to ride. The meals were terrific. We certainly had plenty to eat and Jess and Shaun did a fantastic job serving as both guides and chefs, hats off to them. I couldn’t have asked for nicer people to go away with than the group of girls on the ride. I’d just like to thank all of you at Globetrotting for the fantastic opportunity to go away and do something that I love. The whole trip was fantastic.’

‘This was the trip of a lifetime for me and something I have been working towards for the last five years in line with my riding goals, in order to be able to ride through the beautiful Lord of the Rings high country. What I didn’t realise was just how breathtaking the setting would be in real life, and how outstanding the horses would be. Casey and Deana really have put together an amazing troop of horses that can cater to all manner of riders – we had a broad spectrum of abilities and experience in our group but it didn’t feel like that once we were out in the wilderness. I loved this ride – five days was a long time to be in the saddle, but every day there was something new and different to see and experience. To anyone thinking of doing this trip – stop thinking and just do it!’

‘The Glenorchy Back Country Ride was an amazing experience. We rode on well cared-for and capable horses that were more than willing to go out each day. I was a little nervous about the type of horse I’d have for the week, but needn’t have worried, as my horse Jungle was simply adorable! He looked after me so well and built up my confidence, even jumping a few logs. He was never silly or spooky, just a solid mount. Each day the was scenery was different; beautiful forests, river crossings and riding through long-grassed, open fields with mountains either side – it was fairy tale stuff! The guides were very knowledgeable about the countryside, horses and all the movies that had been filmed along the way. The food was plentiful; my daughter and I have dietary issues and we were catered for flawlessly at each meal, often with multiple options. I can’t thank Deana and Casey’s team enough for putting on such a great week for us. We will remember it fondly for many years.’

‘It’s been a hot minute since I got back from Glenorchy in February. The memories are still making the days at the office tough to take. There was no way to prepare for the epicness and truly unique experiences that bound together our group of intrepid Globetrotters.
We arrived after over half a metre of rain had fallen. Nonetheless, as rain threatened to drown out Deana’s voice in the tack shed, she offered us two options. Option A was to ride. I guess we’ll never know what Option B was. If we were allowed on horses, we were getting on horses! The next several hours were spent trekking along the edges of the swollen Rees River. Our guides, Jess and Shaun, never wavered and our horses never put a hoof wrong. My fellow globetrotters also deserve a round of applause. My trusty steed, Beer, who is famous among globetrotters, never hesitated, even when the water rose midway up his shoulders. We were kept super comfortable at Camp Glenorchy as the weather set in that night. The next day was wet and flooded, with some of the houses in Glenorchy being evacuated, but day 3 dawned bright and beautiful, as though the rain had never happened. We rode 21 kilometres and climbed the equivalent of 250 flights of stairs, and the horses got a well-deserved massage when we arrived at the shearing shed bunkhouse.
Day 4 had a lot of river crossings, with Shaun and Jess carefully picking our path. We got a real indication of the extent of the floods, looking at grass and sticks caught in fences far from the river. We rode into stunning Paradise in the afternoon and explored the trust’s property before dinner, gazing down the valley to some recognisable landscapes from many movies.
Day 5 was the one day when we were able to stick to the itinerary. We rode past several new landslips on the Dart River side of Mt Albert before an amazing long canter along the flat by the river.
This trip was unique and unrepeatable. I loved every minute and I’d love to do it again.’

‘If you want to ride in heaven, this is the closest you will get. I would recommend this ride to anyone. I’m a kiwi living in Australia and I was blown away by the scenery – amazing river crossings, incredible forest tracks, waterfalls (I lost count!), wild deer grazing the hillsides. It just takes your breath away.
Everyone was happy with their horses, which were well matched to their riders. Ruby was the perfect horse for me – just like what I ride at home. The food was amazing. Our guide, Nicola, was very knowledgeable and just super.
This holiday has a bit of everything, a good amount of time in the saddle, and plenty of changes of pace. Start planning, globetrotters, this is a must-do ride!’

‘This was my favourite holiday of all time!! I loved the adventure, beautiful scenery amd amazingly well thought-out itinerary. Our guides were brilliant and friendly, the horses willing and responsive, the camps very well appointed, and the organization was beyond my expectations. ‘There is a reason this ride is always sold out. It is spectacular. A new adventure around every corner. It was so beautiful and varied, from the carpets of blooming lupine to spectacular snow-capped mountain peaks, turquoise ribbons of water threaded across gravel river basins, and glacier-fed waterfalls cascading down mountainsides. Pictures can’t capture the wonder and awe the landscape inspires. Best of all, it was experienced on horseback. What could be better than that?
The guides were relaxed, extremely respectful, knowledgeable and confident. We were treated like pampered guests. Thoughtful touches were present throughout the ride. It was fun from the minute I stepped into the van on our way to Glenorchy. Wonderful conversations, fun times and lots of riding. This ride was everything I had hoped for and more.’

‘This experience was incredible and challenging for me, but nothing can really prepare you for the landscapes and terrain we crossed. The ride itself is one in a million with the trails winding through valleys, rivers and traversing mountains. I loved the river crossings – I haven’t crossed rivers like those before. I also never thought I would have gone up such steep hills. The mid-week day being an optional day is a good idea as well, to help the muscles recover in both horses and riders. The horses were champions at river crossings and anything we threw at them! Jess and Natalie were absolute stars who kept us organised and safe. They both told us lots about the landscapes we were exploring and were fun to be around. The comfort packs were really thoughtful and the organisation of the trip was impeccable. Be prepared to eat extremely well!’

‘If you get the chance, DO THIS RIDE. The scenery is breathtaking, the horses fit, the food yummy and the guides brilliant. My boy Murphy was the perfect gentleman, and he had the smoothest canter! He got on well with all the horses and was a big sweetie. Our guides, Jess and Natalie, were brilliant. Full of information and very thoughtful, caring and helpful. Nothing was a bother, and they were a hoot!’

‘I had an amazing time on this ride. After tearing my ACL ligament a week before the ride, I was apprehensive about how I would cope with such long periods in the saddle, but given I had four friends travelling with me, I was determined to go! Shaun and Jess were so considerate of my pain levels and adjusted the speed of the ride accordingly throughout the day. I managed to ride every day and fell in love with my pocket rocket, Rusty. He took care of me throughout the ride and I was surprisingly emotional when it came to saying goodbye. It is something I will remember forever – beautiful scenery, icy glacial waters, bloodthirsty sandflies, great company, beautiful varied food (including a chocolate birthday cake on our last night!) and a lovely chestnut pony.’

‘Glenorchy was my second Globetrotting ride and to be honest, I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my high expectations after my first amazing experience! Now, in hindsight, I can see I had nothing to worry about. When we arrived I was assigned Snoopy, a beautiful big grey. He was cool, calm, collected and never put a foot wrong.
The riding was phenomenal – beautiful scenery, challenging cliff edges, mesmerising glacial rivers and glacier covered mountains. The guides looked after us very well, making sure we were comfortable, enjoying the experience and learning something along the way. They made sure to point out any film locations (Lord of the Rings, Prince Caspian, Mission Impossible) and gave everyone the chance to ride to the top of their ability and desires – some rode slow and steady, while others were hoon heads.
I went on this ride with one friend; however, by the end, I would say our group were all friends with a shared passion for travel and horses. It’s hard to get back into the real world after a great week like this, but I’m getting through by pondering what my next ride will be…’

‘A stunning scenic ride not to be missed. I loved every minute of it regardless of weather and temperature. Day three was my favourite – the weather was excellent, the scenery spectacular on the way to Lennox Falls, and swimming the horses was last minute on my part, but I loved it. I rode the chilled Murphy. He was such a gentle giant and I always felt safe on him. Jess and Sean were great guides, sharing their knowledge and love for both New Zealand and the horses. The entire team are a well-oiled machine. The care pack was a lovely touch and much appreciated. Finishing at Paradise was sheer luxury – a great way to end the trip.’

‘Another brilliant five days of riding with Jen and Jeremy and their A team of happy horses. I rode Moo, and she was great – responsive and energetic. And on the last day I had the chance to ride Jabberwocky, who I rode on the Grape Horse Adventure earlier this year. Jeremy and Jen were again incredibly patient, cheerful, helpful, and generous with us as guests in their home, and provided wonderful meals. The variety in this ride is a standout, from secret narrow trails through native forest, wide tracks through farmland, the long stretch of pristine beach at Narawntapu National Park, and climbing up the steep rocky scree to the summit of the Great Western Tiers to the most amazing view. Great food, great conversation, great companions. Just do it!’

‘There is no better way to experience the back country in New Zealand than between the ears of a horse! What a fabulous five days. That last day riding back into the real world was so bittersweet! I thoroughly enjoyed this ride – the horses were in good nick, surefooted, willing and so well matched to each rider, our guides Shaun and Jess made us feel so comfortable, the scenery was epic and there was more food than you could poke a stick at! Just don’t forget your DEET!’

‘I’m still trying to adjust back to normal life with a crazy amount of emotions still resonating from memories of my Glenorchy experience. I was most fortunate to have two dear friends join me, which added to how wonderful it all was because I was able to share each extraordinary moment with them.
My horse, Doobie – if only I could have brought him home with me. He was very special and I felt honoured to be cared for by him each day. I’m not sure how he did it in such a short time, but he certainly impacted forever my heart and my mind. Corny but true.
Our guides, Nat, Shaun and Bijmin, were absolutely outstanding in every way! From their extensive knowledge and care of the native flora and fauna and the wonderful history of the region, to their intuitive horsemanship, to their complete professionalism and awesome cooking skills. We consistently felt safe, organised, informed, catered-for and important.

‘I would highly recommend this ride as the scenery is unbelievable and you can only see this on horse or by foot. I loved day 3, when we got to gallop and swim in the canyon. The guides, Shaun and Jess, were fantastic… so knowledgeable and helpful. I rode Gizzy and he was amazing. He took me over some pretty hazardous crossings and never put a foot wrong. When we had the opportunity to gallop he was fantastic… I nicknamed him Bonecrusher, after the famous NZ galloper, as he always came from behind and won all the races!’

‘I absolutely adored every moment of this trip, except possibly the few hours of riding in the rain, but even that was not bad and part of the adventure. An unbelievable, beautiful setting each day. I had a fabulous little steed in Rusty and I know everyone else was happy with their mount. We were looked after so well by our knowledgeable guides. I’d do it again if there were not so many other rides I have not done, so will recommend it in a heartbeat.

‘I really enjoyed my five day ride through the Glenorchy back country. The whole experience, from booking with Globetrotting to the pre-trip information to the ride itself, was easy and seamless. ‘I really struggled to write this as I can’t find the exact words to describe the trip. But I did manage to find one fitting word: FREEDOM. This ride is absolutely stunning from start to finish. The environment is something out of a fairytale (quite literally): the pristine forestry, snow-capped mountain ranges, glacier-fed rivers and waterfalls that hold the cleanest and purest water in the world. Our guides, Jess and Bijmin, were outstanding in their knowledge of the land, horses, people and cooking. Every night the meals were cooked to perfection, and although I’m a little disappointed I didn’t lose weight, I don’t regret for a second not eating the delicious food they provided each and every day. The horses were all superb and well educated – some of the hardiest yet most responsive I’ve had the privilege of riding. If you are thinking of doing this trip, JUST DO IT! The memories and friendships I made over that week will forever be in my heart, and I am so grateful to Globetrotting for allowing me to be a part of something so surreal.’

‘This ride is very well organised, with a different schedule every day. I had plenty of time to relax and enjoy every moment – and there were a lot of them. We had lots of time for great photos and our wonderful guides helped us find the best spots to do it. Bijmin and Jess were so kind, happy and accommodating. I loved how the scenery changes throughout the day, making for a very interesting and fun ride. We cantered fast, cantered slow, trotted, walked through fairytale forests, crossed rivers and gazed at one beautiful scene after another. Swimming with the horses in beautiful turquoise glacier water was breathtaking. All of the food was delicious, with plenty of it. Our accommodations were clean and tidy with great views.
I’ve ridden many miles in many countries and found the three things that make a great ride: good food, beautiful scenery, and good, fun people. This ride had it all to the highest degree. LOVED IT!’

‘If you want a holiday of a lifetime, this is it. You can’t get better scenery, guides, and experiences than this! I rode Gizzy and within five minutes of riding him I was absolutely in love. He was the best horse for me. He built my confidence up, and when we got to gallop he went as fast as I wanted him to go. I felt so connected to him. He was amazing! I absolutely loved swimming the horses through the river, and also the big run up the grassy hill. My mom, sisters, cousin, aunt and I all got to run our horses up the hill at the same time and it was so fun!!

Our guides were outstanding! They just don’t come better than Bijmin and Jess! They work well together and they were so personable to everyone in the group. The accommodations were awesome – rustic and nice. The day we reached Paradise it had rained most of the ride, and when we got to the cottage there was a fire going and snacks out for us. I thought we had died and gone to heaven!’

The guides were wonderful and really knew what they were doing. They knew how to handle the horses and take us through the best places at the rivers. They were a joy to talk to and really were a huge part of why this ride was so wonderful. I loved the changes in scenery and all the different places we stayed. The cottage at Paradise was so wonderful and fitting after riding in some rainy weather. I was so impressed with how well the horses were cared for, too. I rode Star and he was wonderful. I especially enjoyed running him up the big grassy hill. I would recommend this to my friends and anyone else who loves to ride.’

‘What an awesome time in Glenorchy. The scenery was mind blowing, words just doesn’t do this part of the world justice. The horse I was matched to, JT, was awesome and suited me perfectly – he was forward-moving but very relaxed when in the group. The food was wholesome and yummy, the accommodation was comfortable, and what a bonus on the last night to stay at the aptly named ‘Paradise’. Our guides were great – enthusiastic and with so much local knowledge to share. Jess and Bijmin are true horse people, it was definitely great to have met them both.’

This ride is now equal favourite with my all-time high of the Namib Desert Ride… I didn’t think that would ever be possible. But this ride has everything, so it deserves it.’

‘My first Globetrotting experience, and I chose to do it in my home country. It was truly amazing. Jess and Bijmin are the most amazing young people, their horsemanship, care and local knowledge is exceptional – I just loved the two of them to bits. They are funny, clever, and were so patient and professional with everybody. They command respect without being overbearing, always happy. For me they came equal to our beautiful back yard. And they fed us to bursting every day!!! The weather gods didn’t exactly play fair, but that’s not unusual in our mountains, and when the rains stopped and the rivers dropped sufficiently to do safe crossings (river flow records were broken), Jess, Bijmin and Natalie guided us through some of the most stunning scenery in New Zealand. Put this ride on your to do list – you won’t regret it.’

Upon meeting my horse, Slim Shady, I could tell my ride was going to be even more memorable.We clicked instantly and he was one of the best horses I’ve ever ridden. This was a very organized ride with Jess and Bijmin as our guides and cooks, they did a fantastic job and I cannot thank them enough! My favorite day was when we got to swim the horses in the lake. I’d never been swimming with a horse before, and experiencing this for the first time with amazing scenery was something I will never forget!
