Meet a Globetrotter: Donald Dummer

Khovsgol & Arhangay Rides, Mongolia

I think it’s safe to say Donald Dummer is an explorer, an adventurer, and a lover of horse culture. He’s been horse riding in Mongolia not once, but TWICE and each time it keeps getting better.

What was your first Globetrotting ride?
The Arkhangay horseback trek, Mongolia in July 2012.

What made you take the plunge and sign up for this ride?
Very interested in seeing Mongolia for myself after watching lots of videos on TV and the internet.

What Globetrotting rides have you since completed?
I went back to Mongolia in August 2014 to ride the Khovsgol Horse Trek to meet up with the Reindeer People, in north west Mongolia.

What is your most memorable Globetrotting moment?
Gee that is hard, so many great moments, maybe the ride on the wranglers black gelding on the last morning of the first trip. Racing the Kiwi girls back to camp, hand at the buckle so to speak, and it was between his ears, wide open for about 7 kilometers, and he still wanted to go fast, just love those tough little horses.

Why choose this type of travel? As in exploring a new country from the back of a horse?
More time to look around, get up close to things, meet the locals, and I love horses.

Who is your favourite safari horse of all time and why?
The ride on the wranglers black gelding was great, but I really liked the bay and white gelding I had on the second trip, we got on well together, he was light and fast when I wanted him to be.

A tip that every Globetrotter should know before going on a ride…
Keep an open mind, be flexible as plans may have to be changed to suit the horses, enjoy the experience.

Finish this sentence – Don’t leave home without…
