This is the toughest commercial ride in the world – an extraordinary and physically demanding safari through Namibia’s diverse, desert landscape, featuring iconic ochre sand dunes, vast plains, and captivating canyons. 

Commencing in Windhoek, you’ll be picked up from the airport and transferred to your first night’s accommodation, where you’ll meet your fellow travellers and enjoy sundowners and dinner, as well as a ride briefing. The next day you’ll transfer to the desert camp, where horses and crew await for lunch, followed by an excursion to the renowned Sossusvlei to climb Dune 45 and witness the UNESCO World Heritage Site.  

The riding adventure unfolds on day three, starting at a leisurely pace while you acclimatise to your horse and unfamiliar terrain, before traversing the Naukluft mountains’ foothills, crossing significant canyons, and reaching the central Namib’s wide plains. This exquisite part of the Namib Desert features meandering dry floodplains, Camelthorn-lined landscapes, granite inselbergs, and surprising wildlife for such an arid region. The toughest part of the ride is a technical and challenging scramble (on foot) in and out of the Kuiseb Canyon – just wait until you see these horses climb like mountain goats out over the cliffs! 

Approaching the Atlantic Ocean reveals an increasingly arid and ancient geology, creating a moon-like landscape of great allure. The safari concludes at the sea at Swakopmund, marking the end of the physical journey, while the indelible memories promise to last a lifetime. On the final morning you’ll transfer back to Windhoek in time for departing flights after 3:00pm.

Embark on an exhilarating horse riding safari through Namibia’s rugged Damaraland, an inaccessible wilderness adorned with delicately coloured landscapes. This challenging adventure spans from UNESCO-listed Twyfelfontein to the Skeleton Coast, a remote region known for encounters with elephants, rhinos and lions. This could be the most thrilling riding adventure of your life!   

Upon arrival in Windhoek, you’ll enjoy an afternoon briefing followed by sundowners and dinner with your fellow globetrotters. The next morning you’ll transfer to the Aba-Huab river camp, with a side excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein, known for its ancient petroglyphs representing people, animals and rituals.  

On day three, the riding adventure begins. You’ll ride through dry river beds, across mountains, and along the Ugab ephemeral river, offering spectacular views and encounters with desert elephants. The expedition culminates at the Atlantic Ocean in Henties Bay, in a comfortable seaside retreat.

The final day entails a transfer back to Windhoek International Airport for flights departing after 3:00pm, marking the conclusion of this extraordinary Namibian safari.

This ride will take you through some of the most sublime landscapes the southern Namib Desert has to offer – from the rugged Tiras Mountain Reserve to the vast plains adorned with inselbergs (isolated rock mounds jutting out from the plains), and finally to the captivating Namib dune sea.  

You’ll start the journey in Windhoek before transferring to your first campsite to meet the horses and camp crew. A major highlight in this safari is a challenging 27-kilometre crossing of the Namib Dune Sea, surrounded by inspiring scenery. After traversing the dune sea, the route leads up the Koichab river system, offering breathtaking views of the highlands and the habitat of Namibia’s wild horses.

An excursion day includes a visit to the wild horse lookout point, where you can witness horse behaviour in its purest form, the coastal town of Luderitz, and a side trip to the intriguing ‘Ghost Town’ of Kolmanskop. And on the final day, you’ll catch a transfer from Aus to Windhoek International Airport for flights departing after 6:00pm.

The renowned Skeleton Coast holds great allure for those in search of extraordinary landscapes, and leaves an indelible impression. Marked by the remnants of shipwrecks and bustling colonies of Cape Fur Seals, this coastal expanse is steeped in compelling tales and history, and you’ll be lucky enough to discover its magic on horseback. 

Starting with a night in Windhoek, the following day you’ll transfer to Swakopmund on the Atlantic Coast and visit a Cape Fur Seal colony before reaching your seaside campsite and meeting the horses and crew. On day 3, you’ll mount up and explore the extraordinary coastal terrain. Over the next 7 days you’ll be immersed in this coastline, the journey characterised by ever-changing colours and a quickening pace through the arid landscape. The coastal plains offer ample opportunities for long canters and exhilarating gallops – you need to be riding fit! 

Your ride will come to an end back at the Atlantic Ocean, at a comfortable seaside retreat in Henties Bay. The following morning you’ll be transferred back to Windhoek, arriving in time for flights departing after 3:00pm.

10 days, 9 nights, 7 riding days.

You will be met on arrival day at Windhoek airport (Hosea Kutako airport) and transferred to a specified B&B in Windhoek. Here you will meet the rest of your riding group for dinner and a representative to brief you about the ride.

After an early breakfast we journey to the Namib on a transfer (approx. 5 hours) through some spectacular Namib landscapes including a dramatic drop off the escarpment with an arresting view of the desert below. After lunch we depart for a visit to the dunes at Sossusvlei, returning to camp by sunset. The evening will be spent at a tented camp or guesthouse depending on circumstances, whichever a good meal and drinks will settle us all into the flow of the ride.

Our first ride begins amid the encircling Naukluft (German for ‘narrow gorge’) – a short ride before lunch allows you to get more acquainted with your horse before we ride into the undulations and isolated hills which are a feature of this area.

We continue on our riding adventure: cross-country on game and cattle tracks through the bush savannah and plains with stunning views of endless hills and steep rock faces in constantly changing colours. The night’s camping spent around a campfire in either a tent or stretch out under the stars.

While Namibia’s westward-flowing rivers rarely flow, they all run through deep valleys etched at a time when Namibia was wetter and sea levels were lower. We cross two river canyons on our way to the Namib plains; the Gaub and the much larger Kuiseb which forms a dramatic end to the 400 km long Namib Sand Sea. Following the tracks of Mountain Zebra which crisscross the steep sides of the canyon, a technical descent requires some walking/scrambling into and out of the Canyon. The high, narrow walls of the canyon preserve an almost year-round supply of precious water for the game in this area.

Namib Plains to the Swakop River.

This is unspoiled countryside with stunning panoramic views. Marvel at the incredibly beautiful African sunsets and myriads of stars. See mountain zebra, oryx, ostrich, springbok and if you’re lucky some of the desert warthogs while crossing the deserts gravel plains as the crow flies. Good going affords some fast-paced riding on the wide grassy plains on the Namib. It has been known for the mountain zebra to run alongside us on one of our many canters! Dry watercourses, distinguishable by the long lines of acacia trees marking their courses, are much-favored resting place of Giraffe, Springbok and Oryx. As the plains become more arid strange shapes form and disappear in mirages and dinosaur-like of plants, the gnarled Welwitschia Mirabilis tell of a land of great antiquity and also of tremendous solitude. The Swakop river basin has eroded a truly ancient geology (600 million years old) exposing a bizarre moon-like landscape. Curious black ridges of dolerite intrusions form whalebacks on the hills surrounding the river basin. And finally to the sea with the last canter along the beach – the end of a truly epic adventure.

Joyfully ride along the Swakop valley until you reach the dunes and then at last the ocean shore at Swakopmund. Our first glimpse of a town in ten days! And the possibility of riding your horse for the last time along the beach!! For the night we stay in comfortable holiday chalets/guest houses and our horses enjoy their well-deserved rest in a sandy paddock. We meet for a farewell dinner in the evening.

After an early breakfast we all say goodbye as you transfer to Windhoek (just over a 4-hour commute), arriving in time for departure flights from Windhoek International Airport after 3pm.
